Before the 2011-2012 NBA Season started i don’t think anyone picked the Spurs to come out of the second round or be a title contender. Some people had the Mavericks, Lakers, Memphis or the Oklahoma City Thunder to come out of the Western Conference. Well the Mavericks have been swept, the Lakers and the Clippers are on the verge of elimination. Only the Oklahoma City Thunder seems to be the only true contender other than the Spurs in the Western Conference. People always ask why are the Spurs so good consistently.
Well consistency is the name of the game with the Spurs, Greg Popovich has been the Spurs Head Coach for over 15 years. General Manager Peter Holt does a great job scouting talent when it comes to the NBA Draft. They have won 4 championships(1999,2003,2005&2007) in a ten year span. The Spurs also have one of the best things to have in the league is depth. They can go 10 or 11 guys deep with hardly any drop off. The Spurs can beat you in an up and down game and can beat you in a grind it out type of game.
Though Tim Duncan isn’t what he used to be, he can still get it done when it counts. Tony Parker in my view has been one of the top 5 point guards in the NBA and has totally outplayed Chris Paul. The Spurs easily dumped the Utah Jazz in 4 games and it looks like the Spurs will sweep the Clippers. Manu Ginobili gives the Spurs a great scoring punch of the bench and gives them great energy. They have knock down shooters in Matt Bonner, Gary Neal and Danny Green. Kawhi Leonard is one of the most underrated players to come out of the 2011 NBA Draft. They have toughness, depth and great coaching and that is what has made the Spurs so good for so long. Everyone on the Spurs knows their role and plays their role. The Spurs prefer substance over style and that’s what makes a championship team.
